Nothing was wrong with the swing. The number was correct. The number just was not the whole story.
Golf elevation distance adjustment is the gap between the yardage you measure and the yardage the shot actually plays. Uphill shots play longer. Downhill shots play shorter.
Most golfers know that much and then guess at the rest. That is where shots disappear. A 20-foot rise is not a rounding error.
What Elevation Actually Does to Your Yardage
Elevation changes how far the ball travels through the air, not just across the ground. An uphill target forces the ball to climb, and climbing eats carry. A downhill target lets it hang longer, so it goes further than the flat number suggests.
Your rangefinder measures line of sight, straight from your eye to the pin. On flat ground, that is close enough to the playing distance.
On elevation they separate, and the steeper the angle, the wider the gap gets. Here is what shifts the moment the ground tilts:
- Carry: an uphill shot needs more carry to reach the same flag.
- Landing angle: a downhill shot comes in steeper and stops faster.
- Club selection: the difference is often a full club, not a half.

How Much Distance Do You Lose on Uphill Shots?
The working rule: add roughly the elevation gain to your yardage. A green sitting 21 feet above you is about seven yards of climb, so a 150-yard reading plays closer to 157. With 40 feet of rise, you are adding a full club.
Seven yards is the difference between the middle of the green and the front edge.
Short irons and wedges feel it most. A wedge climbs steeply and lands steeply, so it gives up carry faster than a long iron on the same slope. The same 20 feet of rise costs you more with a 9-iron than with a 5-iron.
The geometry is not the only thing working against you. An uphill green usually means an uphill lie, which costs a little clubhead speed, and you cannot see the surface to help you commit.

What You Get Back on Downhill Shots
Downhill shots play shorter, but you do not get the full amount back. Subtract roughly the drop and hold a little in reserve. A green 21 feet below you comes off the number by five to seven yards, and the honest answer sits nearer the low end.
The reason is the landing angle. A ball falling towards a lower target comes in steeper and stops faster, so the run-out you expect never arrives.
Wind compounds it. Downhill shots hang in the air longer, which gives a crosswind more time to work on the ball. On an exposed links hole that is not a small factor.
The common mistake is over-correcting. Golfers look down at a green, take two clubs off, and find the front bunker anyway. Take the measured number and make a full swing.

Why Elevation Costs You More in a British Winter
Elevation never turns up on its own here. It arrives with cold air and a breeze, and the three stack.
Cold air is denser, so the ball carries less. A round at five degrees plays noticeably shorter than the same course in August, and that loss sits on top of whatever the hill is already taking. An uphill 150 in February can genuinely play 165.
Wind is the bigger one. Into a two-club breeze on a climbing shot, you are fighting the slope and the air at the same time, and most golfers under-club for both. Downwind it flips, and the shot that was supposed to be shorter runs through the back.
Soft winter ground removes your safety net. In summer a yard or two short releases onto the surface. In January it plugs where it lands.
This is the one place where a slope-only reading is not enough. Slope tells you what the hill costs. It does not know it is four degrees with a northerly blowing.
